A grid-planned 18th-century medina
Essaouira's medina was laid out in the 1760s on the plan of a European fortress town — straight avenues, whitewashed houses, blue shutters. It is one of the few Moroccan old towns you can explore without getting lost, and it is flat the whole way.
The spice, silver & thuya souks
We thread the main souks with a local guide: the spice arcade, the silver jewellers descended from the old Jewish mellah, and the carpenters carving fragrant thuya root under the ramparts.
The Skala de la Ville & its cannons
Up onto the great sea wall facing the Atlantic, walking the line of genuine antique Spanish and Dutch bronze cannons — the single best view, and the best photo, in town.

This exact rampart became Orson Welles's 1951 Othello, and the medina stood in as the slave city of Astapor in Game of Thrones. We tell the stories straight, on the spot where they were filmed.

That makes it far gentler than the medinas of Fes or Marrakech; the only climb is the short flight of steps up onto the Skala rampart, which can be skipped.
How long does the half-day tour take?
Plan on a relaxed half-day on foot — roughly two and a half to three hours, depending on how long you linger in the souks and on the ramparts. A typical morning starts around 09:30 at the medina gate and finishes above the fishing port before lunch; we can also run it later in the day. Times are flexible and the pace is yours.
Is the medina walk suitable for older travellers or children?
Yes. Essaouira's medina is grid-planned and almost entirely flat, which makes it one of the easiest old towns in Morocco to explore on foot. The only steps are the short climb onto the Skala bastion, and that part can be left out if needed. Children tend to love the line of cannons and the fishing boats unloading at the port.
