Overview
Our signature Essaouira stay: the UNESCO medina and Skala ramparts, an evening of Gnaoua music, the beach at Sidi Kaouki, and the Hendrix legend in the ruins at Diabat.
Three days is the right amount of time for Essaouira. Long enough to stop checking the clock; short enough that you spend it all on the coast. We base you in a medina riad and build the days around the things this town does better than anywhere else: the ramparts and the souks, the Gnaoua trance music that has its own June festival here, the wide empty beaches south of the walls, and the salt wind that made Essaouira a surfers' town.
Sidi Kaouki, fifteen minutes down the coast, is a long Atlantic beach with surf schools, horses and camels at the water's edge and almost nothing built behind it. Diabat, just across the river mouth, holds the ruined fort of Borj el Berod — half-swallowed by sand and tied, in local legend, to Jimi Hendrix's 1969 visit. It is widely believed to have inspired 'Castles Made of Sand', though Hendrix in fact recorded the song before he ever came; we tell it straight and let the ruin speak for itself.

Day 1 · Medina, ramparts and Gnaoua music
EssaouiraSettle into your riad. Afternoon walking the medina and the Skala de la Ville with a guide, sardines on the port at dusk, then an evening of Gnaoua music — the hypnotic Afro-Berber trance tradition for which Essaouira is famous and which fills the town each June.

Day 2 · Sidi Kaouki beach day
Sidi KaoukiFifteen minutes south to Sidi Kaouki — a wide, wind-blown Atlantic beach. A walk along the sand, horses and camels at the shoreline, and an optional surf lesson with a local school. Lunch at a beach shack, back to Essaouira by sunset.

Day 3 · Diabat, Borj el Berod and the dunes
DiabatAcross the Ksob river mouth to the hamlet of Diabat and the half-buried ruins of Borj el Berod — a Portuguese-era sea fort sinking into the dunes, wrapped in the Hendrix legend. A walk in the coastal dunes, then a slow last lunch before your onward transfer or airport drop.

Is Essaouira always windy?
Almost. Essaouira sits in the path of the Atlantic trade winds — the 'Alizés' — which is exactly why it is a world-class surf and kitesurf town and why the medina stays cool in summer. The wind is strongest in the afternoons from April to September and gentler in the morning and through autumn. The walled medina, the port and the souks are sheltered and always comfortable; we bring a windproof layer for every client.
When should I book?
For high season (Sep–Apr), the June Gnaoua festival, and any trip with a surf or kitesurf lesson, book 4–8 weeks ahead. Last-minute is usually still possible with a phone call.
Did Jimi Hendrix really write 'Castles Made of Sand' at Diabat?
No — and we won't pretend otherwise. Hendrix did visit Essaouira and Diabat in July 1969, and the half-buried Borj el Berod fort is genuinely tied to him in local memory. But 'Castles Made of Sand' was released in 1967, two years before he arrived, so the ruin cannot have inspired it. It is a lovely story and a real place; we just tell it honestly.
Can we time this around the Gnaoua festival?
Absolutely. The Gnaoua World Music Festival fills Essaouira for four days in late June and is one of the great free music events in Africa. Book well ahead — riads sell out months in advance — and we'll build the stay around the stages.
