Why Sahara & Merzouga
If Essaouira is Morocco's Atlantic edge, Erg Chebbi is its opposite extreme: a 22 km field of orange dunes near the village of Merzouga, rising up to 150 m above the desert floor, hard against the Algerian frontier. It is a long way from the sea — roughly a day and a half from Essaouira via Marrakech, the Tizi n'Tichka pass and the Dadès and Todra gorges, or a flight to Errachidia and a 2-hour drive. The reward is one of the most cinematic landscapes on the planet and a night in a tented camp with Berber hosts. We treat it as the deep-country half of a trip that begins or ends with the wind and seafood of the coast.
What to see
A 60–90 minute ride from the village to your camp, ideally timed for late afternoon when the dunes turn copper.
Canvas suites with proper beds, en-suite bathrooms, candlelit dinner and gnaoua musicians around the fire.
Wake at 5:30, climb 150m of sand, watch the sun come up over Algeria.
Further south, accessed from M'Hamid by 4x4 — quieter, fewer camps, harder to reach. Our preferred option for repeat visitors.

Not in a day — the real dunes (Erg Chebbi or Chigaga) are a day and a half from the coast and around 9 hours from Marrakech. If time is short, the Agafay stone desert near Marrakech gives a desert sunset without the Sahara distance.
July–August daytime temperatures regularly exceed 45°C and many camps close or move — exactly when the trade-wind-cooled Essaouira coast is at its best. October–April is the desert season; March and November are ideal.
Erg Chebbi (Merzouga) is more accessible with more camp options. Erg Chigaga is wilder, quieter and needs a 4x4 — better for travellers who have already done the easier desert trips.
