Chasing the wind in Essaouira.
Essaouira (the old Mogador) is unlike any other Moroccan city — Atlantic, windswept, artists-and-fishermen at the same time. These are the six things that make it singular.
Skala
The sea ramparts & brass cannons
The Skala de la Ville is a 18th-century sea bastion lined with Portuguese-cast brass cannons pointing out to sea. Orson Welles filmed his Othello here in 1952; Game of Thrones used it as Astapor. At dawn it belongs entirely to you.
Port
Blue boats & the working harbour
Essaouira's fleet of cobalt-blue wooden sardine boats returns mid-morning through the harbour wall. Buy your fish off the ice and have it grilled on the quay with bread and salt — this is the most honest meal in Morocco.
Medina
A UNESCO medina, European in plan
The only Moroccan medina laid out by a European architect — Théodore Cornut in 1765. Wide, navigable streets, whitewashed walls and an orderly grid make it both beautiful and surprisingly easy to walk without a map.

The best months
Essaouira's secret is the wind — it keeps the town mild while inland Morocco bakes. April to October is brightest for the beach and the watersports, and late June brings the Gnaoua World Music Festival, when the whole medina turns into one open-air stage. Winter is grey-blue and quiet, ideal for long walks on the ramparts and a town that is entirely your own.
What to do first
Start at the Skala de la Ville, the cannon-lined sea bastion, then walk down into the fishing port when the blue boats come in. Spend a slow afternoon in the whitewashed medina among the thuya woodwork and argan co-ops, eat a grilled-sardine lunch on the quay, and finish the day at Sidi Kaouki watching the windsurfers and the sunset.
What we wouldn't do
- Rushing Essaouira as a half-day stop from Marrakech — give it two nights at least.
- Booking a beach lunch at noon in summer — the wind picks up; go earlier or shelter in the medina.
- Buying thuya wood on day one. Spend a morning in the workshops under the ramparts learning what good inlay looks like, then buy on day two.
- Skipping the early port. Dawn, when the catch lands and the gulls wheel, is the most honest hour in town.
A note on budget
A well-built private few days in Essaouira for two — a medina riad, a private guide, a windsurf morning and a couple of standout seafood dinners — generally lands between $900 and $2,200 per person, all in on the ground.
