Four days tracing the Atlantic seaboard north from Essaouira: the UNESCO medina and argan country, the blue-and-white pottery of Safi, and fresh oysters straight from the Oualidia lagoon.
Essaouira is the start and the heart of this trip, but it also opens onto one of the least-travelled stretches of the Moroccan coast. We give you two nights in the medina and then drive the coast road north — slower than the motorway, with the ocean never out of sight — to the working port of Safi and the oyster lagoon at Oualidia, before looping back.
Safi is a salt-stained fishing city with a Portuguese sea castle and a potters' quarter that has produced Morocco's distinctive blue-and-white ceramics for centuries. Oualidia is the secret: a narrow tidal lagoon where a small community farms flat oysters eaten metres from the water. Throughout, Essaouira remains the base you return to — argan forests inland, the Skala ramparts at dusk, the salt wind off the Atlantic.

Essaouira · argan forestA morning loop into the argan biosphere — the climbing goats, a women's pressing cooperative — then a free afternoon on Essaouira's town beach or back in the medina.

Coast road north · 175kmNorth up the coast to Safi: the Dar el Bahar sea castle, the hilltop potters' quarter and its kilns, lunch on the quay. On to the Oualidia lagoon for a late-afternoon oyster tasting at a farm table, feet near the sand.

Is Essaouira always windy?
Almost. Essaouira sits in the path of the Atlantic trade winds — the 'Alizés' — which is exactly why it is a world-class surf and kitesurf town and why the medina stays cool in summer. The wind is strongest in the afternoons from April to September and gentler in the morning and through autumn. The walled medina, the port and the souks are sheltered and always comfortable; we bring a windproof layer for every client.
When should I book?
For high season (Sep–Apr), the June Gnaoua festival, and any trip with a surf or kitesurf lesson, book 4–8 weeks ahead. Last-minute is usually still possible with a phone call.
Are the oysters at Oualidia safe to eat?
Yes. Oualidia is Morocco's premier oyster-farming lagoon — flat oysters cultivated in a semi-enclosed tidal bay, tested regularly, and eaten raw by locals year-round. We only visit licensed farms with clean-water certification.
