Why Marrakech

For us in Essaouira, Marrakech is the great inland counterpoint: a two-and-a-half-hour drive east across the argan plains, and the airport most guests fly into before the run down to the coast. Where Essaouira is open, windswept and Atlantic, Marrakech is dense, hot and theatrical — the ochre-walled imperial city of the south. Inside the ramparts lie the UNESCO-listed medina, the nightly drama of the Jemaa el-Fnaa, the Koutoubia minaret, the Bahia Palace, the Saadian Tombs and the cobalt Majorelle garden Yves Saint Laurent saved in 1980. We build it as the lively bookend to a calm Essaouira stay — a couple of intense city days before or after the sea air.

Marrakech — common questions.

How many days do you need in Marrakech?+

Three full days covers the medina, the major monuments and one half-day excursion (Agafay or Ourika). Many guests then drive two and a half hours west to wind down on the Essaouira coast.

How far is Marrakech from Essaouira?+

About 175 km, or two and a half hours by road across the argan plains. It is an easy, scenic transfer and the most common way our guests combine the imperial city with the Atlantic coast.

What is the best month to visit Marrakech?+

March–May and September–November bring warm days (22–28°C) and cool evenings. June–August can top 40°C inland — when the Essaouira coast, 6–8°C cooler with its trade wind, is the obvious relief.
