The argan road
The drive itself is part of the trip. The road crosses the argan plains, where in places you will see the famous goats balanced in the trees, browsing the fruit. Women's cooperatives along the route press argan oil by hand, and a stop to watch — and to buy culinary oil and amlou at the source — is the classic break. The ramparts and the port
Arrive before midday and head straight for the walls. The Skala de la Ville, lined with old cannons above the Atlantic, is the signature walk, and the working port below it — blue boats, a noisy fish auction, wooden trawlers under repair — is the soul of the town. Walk the ramparts, watch the catch come in, and you have seen the best of Essaouira's surface in an hour.
Get there early: by mid-afternoon the wind sharpens and the day-trip coaches fill Place Moulay Hassan. Your driver will time the run to beat them.
A fish lunch and the souks
Lunch is the easy highlight. The grill stalls between the port and the square let you pick your fish from the ice — sardines, sea bream, calamari — and eat it cooked over coals with bread and salad. Afterwards, the souks are gentle and walkable: thuya woodwork under the ramparts, argan oil, raffia bags and spices, with softer prices and gentler haggling than Marrakech.
If the wind is up and you have a couple of hours, the broad beach south of the medina is the place to watch the windsurfers and kitesurfers carve across the bay.

Leave Marrakech early, carry water and a windproof layer for the coast, and avoid driving the return leg in the dark in winter. Spring and autumn are the kindest seasons at both ends; in summer the Atlantic is a relief from inland heat.
