Overview
A guided half-day on foot through Essaouira's UNESCO-listed medina — the spice and silver souks, the thuya woodworkers — out onto the Skala de la Ville sea bastion where the brass cannons face the Atlantic.
Essaouira's medina was laid out in the 1760s by a French captive architect for Sultan Sidi Mohammed ben Abdallah, on the grid of a European fortress town. It is one of the few Moroccan medinas you can walk without getting lost — straight avenues, whitewashed houses, blue shutters, and the constant sound of the Atlantic over the walls. UNESCO listed it in 2001 as a rare example of a late-18th-century fortified port.
We walk it slowly with a local guide: the clock-tower gate, the spice and jewellery souks, the thuya woodworkers' arcades, and the two great sea bastions — the Skala de la Ville with its row of Spanish and Dutch bronze cannons (the rampart where Orson Welles filmed Othello and where the city stood in as 'Astapor' in Game of Thrones), and the Skala du Port over the working harbour. We finish above the blue fishing boats as they unload the morning catch.

Is Essaouira always windy?
Almost. Essaouira sits in the path of the Atlantic trade winds — the 'Alizés' — which is exactly why it is a world-class surf and kitesurf town and why the medina stays cool in summer. The wind is strongest in the afternoons from April to September and gentler in the morning and through autumn. The walled medina, the port and the souks are sheltered and always comfortable; we bring a windproof layer for every client.
When should I book?
For high season (Sep–Apr), the June Gnaoua festival, and any trip with a surf or kitesurf lesson, book 4–8 weeks ahead. Last-minute is usually still possible with a phone call.
Is the medina walk suitable for older travellers or children?
Yes. Essaouira's medina is flat and grid-planned — far easier than Fes or Marrakech. The only steps are the short climb onto the Skala rampart, which we can skip if needed. Children love the cannons and the fishing boats.
