A hands-on half-day with two of Essaouira's living crafts: the thuya-root woodworkers of the medina arcades and a Gnaoua musician who teaches the rhythm of the city's signature trance music.
Essaouira has two crafts you find nowhere else in quite the same form. The first is thuya — the fragrant, burled root of a conifer that grows only in this region, which the town's carpenters have turned into inlaid boxes and furniture for generations; their workshops line the arcades under the ramparts. The second is Gnaoua, the Afro-Berber spiritual music brought by enslaved West Africans centuries ago, all iron castanets and the deep three-stringed guembri, which now has its own world festival here each June.
This half-day takes you behind both. You'll sit with a thuya carver as he shapes and inlays the wood, understand how the root is harvested sustainably, and try the tools yourself. Then to a Gnaoua maâlem (master musician) for a short workshop: the guembri, the qraqeb castanets, and the rhythm that drives the trance. You leave with a small piece you helped make and the sound of the guembri in your head.

Is Essaouira always windy?
Almost. Essaouira sits in the path of the Atlantic trade winds — the 'Alizés' — which is exactly why it is a world-class surf and kitesurf town and why the medina stays cool in summer. The wind is strongest in the afternoons from April to September and gentler in the morning and through autumn. The walled medina, the port and the souks are sheltered and always comfortable; we bring a windproof layer for every client.
When should I book?
For high season (Sep–Apr), the June Gnaoua festival, and any trip with a surf or kitesurf lesson, book 4–8 weeks ahead. Last-minute is usually still possible with a phone call.
Is the thuya wood harvested sustainably?
The cooperatives we visit work the burl and root of trees within the protected argan-and-thuya biosphere under regulated harvesting. We deliberately choose workshops that source legally and explain the conservation rules, rather than the cheaper unregulated trade.
