A full day of windsurf or kitesurf instruction on Essaouira's sheltered bay, where the steady Alizé trade winds give the town its nickname 'Wind City of Africa'.
Essaouira's wide southern bay is one of the most reliable beginner-to-intermediate wind spots on the planet. The Alizés — the Atlantic trade winds that blow almost every afternoon from spring through autumn — meet flat, shallow water inside the bay, which is exactly the combination a learner wants: enough wind to get going, calm enough not to be punished for it. It is why Essaouira is known across the windsurfing world as the 'Wind City of Africa'.
We book you with an IKO/VDWS-certified local centre on the bay for a half- or full-day lesson in either windsurfing or kitesurfing, all gear and wetsuit included. Mornings are usually lighter — good for getting the basics — and the wind fills in through the afternoon. Non-surfing partners can watch from a beach café over mint tea.

Is Essaouira always windy?
Almost. Essaouira sits in the path of the Atlantic trade winds — the 'Alizés' — which is exactly why it is a world-class surf and kitesurf town and why the medina stays cool in summer. The wind is strongest in the afternoons from April to September and gentler in the morning and through autumn. The walled medina, the port and the souks are sheltered and always comfortable; we bring a windproof layer for every client.
When should I book?
For high season (Sep–Apr), the June Gnaoua festival, and any trip with a surf or kitesurf lesson, book 4–8 weeks ahead. Last-minute is usually still possible with a phone call.
When is the wind best for learning?
April to September is the windy season, with the strongest, most reliable Alizés in summer afternoons. Mornings are lighter and ideal for absolute beginners. In winter the wind is patchier; we'll advise honestly on conditions before you book and reschedule a flat day at no charge.
What's the difference between learning windsurf and kitesurf here?
Windsurfing is quicker to stand up and ride and very forgiving in the bay's flat water — a good one-day taster. Kitesurfing takes longer to reach independence (usually several sessions) but is the sport most riders ultimately want. The centres teach both; tell us your goal and we'll match the lesson.
