Why Dadès & Todra Gorges
Far inland from the coast, between Ouarzazate and the Sahara, the kasbah road threads two of Morocco's most spectacular canyons. The Todra Gorge narrows to a 300-metre slot barely 10 metres wide, beloved of rock climbers; the Dadès Gorge twists through rose-coloured rock past the surreal 'monkey-finger' formations and the famous hairpin switchbacks. In between lie palm oases, mudbrick kasbahs and the damask roses of the Valley of Roses around Kelaat M'Gouna. For travellers starting on the Essaouira coast, the gorges are the scenic middle act of the long crossing to the dunes — the landscape at its most dramatic before the sand begins.
