Overview
A half-day across the river to the hamlet of Diabat and the half-buried Borj el Berod sea fort — a sand-swallowed ruin in the dunes, wrapped in the legend of Jimi Hendrix's 1969 visit.
Just south of Essaouira, across the mouth of the Ksob river, the dunes are slowly burying an old Portuguese-era artillery tower called Borj el Berod. Half-collapsed and ankle-deep in sand, it is one of the most atmospheric ruins on the coast — and the focus of Essaouira's favourite rock-and-roll legend. Jimi Hendrix really did visit Diabat in July 1969, and locals have long claimed the fort inspired 'Castles Made of Sand'. The dates don't add up — the song came out in 1967 — but the story has given the sleepy hamlet a small cult fame.
We walk you across to Diabat, out to the ruins and the coastal dunes around them, and tell the Hendrix story honestly. It pairs perfectly with a sunset; the low light on the broken tower and the empty beach is the whole reason to come.

Frequently asked
Questions about this tour.
Is "Diabat & the Borj el Berod Ruins" private or a group tour?
100% private. Just you and the people you book with — your own driver, guide and pace from start to finish. We never pool travellers.
Can I change the dates or itinerary?
Yes. Every itinerary is a starting point. Add a day, swap a riad, change the start point — we'll re-quote in 24 hours and lock the price in writing before any deposit.
Is Essaouira always windy?
Almost. Essaouira sits in the path of the Atlantic trade winds — the 'Alizés' — which is exactly why it is a world-class surf and kitesurf town and why the medina stays cool in summer. The wind is strongest in the afternoons from April to September and gentler in the morning and through autumn. The walled medina, the port and the souks are sheltered and always comfortable; we bring a windproof layer for every client.
When should I book?
For high season (Sep–Apr), the June Gnaoua festival, and any trip with a surf or kitesurf lesson, book 4–8 weeks ahead. Last-minute is usually still possible with a phone call.
Did Hendrix really write a song about this ruin?
No, though it's a wonderful story. Hendrix visited Diabat in 1969, but 'Castles Made of Sand' was released in 1967 — so the fort can't have inspired it. We tell guests the truth: a real place, a real visit, and a myth that grew up afterwards. The ruin is worth the trip on its own.
