The Hendrix story — told straight
Did Jimi Hendrix really write “Castles Made of Sand” here?
No — and we won’t sell you a myth as fact. The story goes that Hendrix lived in Diabat and that the sand-swallowed fort inspired the song. He did briefly visit Essaouira and Diabat in July 1969, and the hamlet has built a small cult fame around it. But “Castles Made of Sand” came out in 1967, two years before he ever set foot here — so the ruin cannot have inspired it. It’s a lovely legend attached to a real place and a real visit, and that’s exactly how we’ll tell it: a good story, honestly framed.

An old Portuguese-era artillery tower, half-collapsed and ankle-deep in drifting sand — one of the most atmospheric ruins on this coast, slowly being swallowed by the dunes. It is the focal point of the walk and the reason most people come.
The Hendrix legend, honestly
Diabat's claim to fame is the story that Jimi Hendrix lived here and was inspired by the fort. We tell it as what it is — a local legend, not fact — because the song predates his 1969 visit. A good tale, told straight.
The coastal dunes
A flat, easy walk out through the dunes that ring the ruin, with the open Atlantic on one side and the green of the Ksob river valley on the other. Soft sand underfoot, so closed shoes help.
The empty beach south of the river
Past the fort, the long undeveloped beach runs south toward Sidi Kaouki — the wild coast as it was before anyone built on it. Walk it, watch the wind, or simply sit with the sound of the surf.
Best at sunset
