The Atlantic coast and argan country on the road to Essaouira — Essaouira Tours

Journal · Itinerary

What does a perfect 7-day coastal Morocco trip actually look like?

Our field-tested loop from Marrakech to the Atlantic — the argan road, Essaouira's ramparts and port, the beach and surf, Sidi Kaouki and Diabat — broken down day by day with honest logistics.

Seven days is the sweet spot for a coastal first trip — long enough to feel the full arc of Marrakech and the Atlantic, short enough to keep it relaxed. The loop below is one we've refined over hundreds of journeys: it balances a taste of the imperial city, the argan road, the walled port of Essaouira and the wild coast beyond, without a single wasted hour.

Day 1 — Arrive in Marrakech: settle in and slow down

Most flights into Marrakech arrive through the day. Resist the urge to plunge into a full schedule. Let your riad receive you: a mint tea, a rooftop at sunset over the medina, a first tagine dinner. This first evening sets the tempo for the week. Your driver will meet you at arrivals and handle the transfer — part of the arrival ritual.

Day 2 — Marrakech to Essaouira: the argan road

Leave mid-morning and drive west across the argan plains, where the famous goats balance in the trees. Stop at a women's argan cooperative to watch the oil pressed and buy amlou at the source. Arrive in Essaouira for a late lunch at the port grills, then settle into a riad inside the walls and walk the ramparts at golden hour. Two and a half to three hours of scenic driving, bookended by sea and souk.

Day 3 — Essaouira: ramparts, port and medina

Spend the day on foot. The Skala de la Ville and its cannons, the blue gate of the Skala du Port, the morning fish auction, the thuya-wood workshops under the ramparts and the souks around Place Moulay Hassan. Lunch at the grills; dinner on a rooftop over the masts as the wind drops. The medina is small enough to feel like yours by the end of the day.

Day 4 — The beach, the wind and a first surf

Head for the great beach south of the medina. Mornings are calm — ideal for a first windsurf or kitesurf lesson at one of the beach schools, or a long walk toward the ruined Bordj el Berod tower. Watch the riders carve across the bay as the afternoon wind builds, then take a horse or camel ride along the tide line at dusk. Plan it around the wind, not the clock.

Day 5 — Diabat and Sidi Kaouki: the wild coast

Ride or drive out to Diabat, the Hendrix village across the Oued Ksob river, then continue 25 km south to Sidi Kaouki — a long, near-empty surf beach backed by dunes and argan, with a handful of laid-back cafés. It is the elemental Atlantic at its rawest: wind, sand and open horizon. Allow a relaxed half to full day, then back to Essaouira for sunset on the Skala.

Day 6 — A free day in Essaouira

Keep one day unstructured — the town rewards it. Browse the painters' galleries, take a cooking class for a fish tagine, book a boat trip past the Île de Mogador bird sanctuary, or simply read on a rooftop with a mint tea. The slow rhythm of Essaouira, with the coaches gone after four, is the part most guests remember.

Day 7 — Back to Marrakech, or fly from Mogador

On the last morning, take a final walk on the ramparts and a coffee on Place Moulay Hassan before the drive back to Marrakech (two and a half to three hours) for an onward flight — or fly out directly from the small Essaouira-Mogador airport if your dates suit. Seven days, one stretch of windswept coast, a hundred memories.

Frequently asked

Is seven days enough for the Atlantic coast and Essaouira?

Seven days is plenty for a relaxed coastal loop: Marrakech to start, three or four nights in Essaouira with the ramparts, port, beach and surf, day trips to Sidi Kaouki and Diabat, an argan-cooperative stop, and time for a wilder beach further down the coast. It is a slower, gentler week than a grand-tour itinerary, which is exactly the appeal.

What is the best time of year for this coastal itinerary?

April–June and September–October give the best balance of warmth, sunshine and slightly gentler wind. June brings the Gnaoua Festival. High summer is windy but a cool escape from inland heat — ideal for surf, less so for lazing on the beach. Winter is mild, breezy and quiet, fine for the medina and rooftops but cool for the water.

Should we fly into Marrakech or Essaouira?

Marrakech has the widest international connections and pairs the coast with a couple of imperial-city days, then a scenic drive west. Essaouira's small Mogador airport has seasonal European flights if you want to go straight to the sea. For the loop below, Marrakech in / Marrakech out (or Essaouira out by air) is the cleanest option.

How much does a private 7-day coastal Morocco tour cost?

Fully private, with a driver, comfortable riads, most breakfasts and all transfers, expect roughly US$1,800–3,800 per person depending on group size and accommodation category, plus activities like surf lessons. Larger groups bring the per-person cost down considerably. We quote precisely after understanding your preferences.

Can we do this itinerary independently without a guide?

Yes — the Marrakech–Essaouira road is good, coaches run frequently, and Essaouira is easy to get around on foot. That said, a private driver makes the argan and coast stops effortless, and local guides unlock the ramparts, port and crafts. For a first visit, most of our guests find a driver and a guided day or two transform the experience.

What should we pack for a 7-day coastal trip?

Light layers plus a windproof outer layer — Essaouira's afternoon trade wind cools the beach even in summer. Bring sun protection, something to keep sand out of your eyes, swimwear and a rash vest if you'll surf, and comfortable shoes for the medina cobbles. A light scarf is useful for the wind and for sun. Buy nothing fancy; the coast is casual.
