Why Tangier

Tangier is the far northern end of the same Atlantic seaboard that Essaouira anchors in the centre — but a world apart in character. Here the Atlantic meets the Mediterranean and Spain is visible across the strait on a clear day. Long an international city, administered jointly by foreign powers from 1923 to 1956, it drew Matisse, Paul Bowles, William Burroughs and the Rolling Stones. Today it is the polished, cosmopolitan gateway to northern Morocco: a 35-minute ferry from Tarifa, a 2-hour drive to Chefchaouen and a 4-hour drive (or 2h high-speed train) to Fes. For coastal travellers it is the launch point of the northern Atlantic loop, where the seaboard is steeper, greener and more European than the windswept dunes of the south.

FAQ

Tangiercommon questions.

Is Tangier worth visiting?+

Yes, especially if you are entering Morocco from Spain or building a northern Atlantic loop (Tangier → Asilah → Chefchaouen → Fes). It is the most cosmopolitan of Morocco's old cities and the natural northern bookend to the coast.

How long do you need in Tangier?+

Two nights is the sweet spot — one day for the kasbah and medina, one for Cap Spartel and a long lunch by the strait.
