Why Asilah
Asilah is the northern Atlantic cousin of Essaouira — another small, whitewashed, rampart-wrapped town facing the same ocean, but 600 km up the coast near Tangier. Forty minutes south of Tangier, it is the prettiest small town on Morocco's northern shore: a compact medina inside Portuguese sea walls, with cobalt-blue doors, bougainvillea and the Atlantic breaking against the stone. Each summer an arts festival covers the lanes with fresh murals, and the town stays calm and creative year-round. Like Essaouira it shares the Portuguese-fortress heritage and the artists' atmosphere; unlike it, Asilah is paired with the northern loop of Tangier, Tétouan and Chefchaouen rather than the central coast.
