Why Rabat
Rabat is Morocco's political capital and one of its most relaxed cities, sitting on the Atlantic coast between Casablanca and Tangier — the same seaboard as Essaouira, here at the mouth of the Bou Regreg river. It is a UNESCO-listed blend of Almohad ramparts, French-era avenues and clear coastal light. The blue-and-white kasbah of the Udayas overlooks the river mouth; the unfinished Hassan Tower and the marble Mausoleum of Mohammed V anchor the skyline; and the medina is gentle, walkable and refreshingly hassle-free. For travellers working the Atlantic coast, it is the calm, official-feeling stop on the northern half of the seaboard.
