Medina, ramparts & the working port

Enter through Bab Doukkala and wander the grid-planned medina laid out by Théodore Cornut in the 1760s. Walk the Skala de la Ville with its line of European cannons, browse the thuya-wood and silver workshops, then end at the blue fishing harbour as the boats land the day's catch.

Beach, kitesurf bay & sunset on the ramparts

Spend the morning on the long sheltered bay where the steady trade wind makes Essaouira a world kitesurf and windsurf hub. Walk south toward the ruined Borj el Berod tower, then return for grilled sardines and a final sunset from the Skala du Port.

Good to know

Practical notes

  • Essaouira is about 2.5–3 hours by road from Marrakech (around 190 km), an easy weekend escape.
  • The 'Alizés' trade wind blows hardest April–September — ideal for watersports, cool for sunbathing, so pack a windproof layer.
  • The medina is flat, walled and pedestrian — one of the easiest in Morocco to navigate without a guide.

Frequently asked

Is two days enough for Essaouira?

Yes — a weekend covers the medina and ramparts, the fishing port and a beach afternoon comfortably. Add a third day only if you want a watersports lesson or a slower pace.

How do I get to Essaouira for a weekend?

Most visitors drive or take a shared transfer from Marrakech (about 2.5–3 hours). Essaouira also has its own small airport (Essaouira-Mogador, ESU) with seasonal European flights.
