Good to know
Practical notes
- Distances are short: Essaouira–Safi ~2 hours, Safi–Oualidia ~1.5 hours, Oualidia–El Jadida ~1.5 hours.
- Oualidia oysters are farmed in the lagoon and safe to eat at the established farm restaurants.
- A car (self-drive or with driver) makes this route far easier than public transport along the coast.
Frequently asked
Is the Atlantic coast worth a road trip in Morocco?
Yes — the Essaouira-to-El Jadida coast is a quieter, cooler alternative to the inland imperial cities, with the surf and wind of Essaouira and Safi, the Oualidia oyster lagoon and El Jadida's Portuguese cistern.
How long is the drive from Essaouira to El Jadida?
About 4–5 hours direct, but the point of this trip is to break it into short hops via Safi and Oualidia over several days.
