Why Ouarzazate & Aït Ben Haddou
Ouarzazate lies on the dry southern side of the Tizi n'Tichka pass, the first town of the pre-Sahara and the staging post for everything beyond — the dunes, the Dadès and Drâa valleys and the kasbah road. From the Essaouira coast it is a full day's drive inland over Marrakech and the High Atlas, a deliberate crossing from sea-level wind to mountain desert. Forty minutes away stands Aït Ben Haddou, the most famous fortified village in Morocco — a UNESCO site and the backdrop of Gladiator, Lawrence of Arabia, Game of Thrones and dozens of films shot at the neighbouring Atlas Studios. It is the natural overnight on any route between the coast and the Sahara.

Is Aït Ben Haddou worth the detour?+
Yes — it's the most striking single site in southern Morocco and a UNESCO World Heritage village. Most travellers see it for an hour; we recommend sunset or sunrise.
Can I visit Ouarzazate as a day trip from Marrakech?+
Technically yes (4h each way) but punishing — and you miss the magic-hour light. It is always better as a one-night stop on the longer route from the coast and Marrakech toward the Sahara.
