Things to do in Essaouira

Essaouira makes a fine base for exploring this corner of Morocco. The coast unrolls north and south into surf villages and empty beaches, the argan country climbs inland, and the great red city of Marrakech sits a couple of hours over the hills. This is an honest overview of where you can realistically get to and back in a day, with rough drive times.

The best of Essaouira

01Coast

Sidi Kaouki

About 25 km and 30 minutes south, a wild surf beach gathered around a seaside marabout shrine. The easiest half-day from town, with surf, windsurfing and horse rides on long open sand.

02Coast

Diabat & the dunes

Just south across the Oued Ksob, the dunes, the half-buried Borj el Bermil fort and the old hippie village of Diabat make a short walk or ride from the end of Essaouira beach.

03City

Marrakech

The Red City lies about 190 km and two and a half to three hours inland. A long but doable day trip for Jemaa el-Fnaa and the souks, though an overnight does it far more justice.

04Countryside

Argan co-operatives

On the roads toward Marrakech and Agadir, women's co-operatives in the argan forest demonstrate the hand-pressing of oil — an easy stop of an hour or two from town.

05Surf

Imsouane

A fishing-and-surf village roughly two hours south, famous for one of the longest right-hand waves in Morocco. A favourite day or overnight for surfers heading toward the Agadir coast.

06Coast

Agadir & Taghazout

The resort city of Agadir and the surf village of Taghazout lie around 170 km and two and a half to three hours south, a longer day better suited to an overnight if you want to enjoy the beaches and breaks.

Frequently asked

What are the best day trips from Essaouira?

The easiest half-day trips are Sidi Kaouki and Diabat down the coast. Further out, you can reach the argan co-operatives inland, the surf village of Imsouane to the south, and Marrakech about two and a half to three hours away, though Marrakech and Agadir are better as overnights.

How far is Marrakech from Essaouira?

Marrakech is about 190 kilometres and two and a half to three hours inland from Essaouira. It works as a long day trip, but staying overnight gives you far more time for the medina, souks and Jemaa el-Fnaa.

Can you do a day trip to the beach from Essaouira?

Yes. Sidi Kaouki, about 25 km south, is the classic beach day trip, with surf, windsurfing and horse rides. Diabat and the dunes are even closer, and surfers often push on to Imsouane further down the coast.

Is Essaouira a good base for exploring the coast?

Yes. With its walled medina, beach and central position, Essaouira is an excellent base: surf villages and empty beaches lie north and south, the argan country and Marrakech are inland, and the relaxed pace makes day trips easy.
